Sweetwater Oaks Garden Club presented the 7th Annual Garden Fair & Floral Design Exhibit on Sunday March 11th, in Longwood. Rain showers didn’t prevent the community from showing their support of this annual event that they have come to look forward to over the years.

The event was opened by Jim Payle, WESH 2 Broadcaster and Sweetwater Resident. Over 40 garden-related vendors brought: Flowering Perennials, Herbs, Orchids, Natural Fertilizers, Bromeliads and Gourds to Dish Gardens, Paw Paw Plants, and Floral Paintings and much more. The vendors reported that their sales were good and they look forward to next year rain or shine!

The Floral Design Exhibit in the Morse Insurance Building was very well attended. Cookie the Clown brought her 6 ft. tall “Balloon Princess”. The children were able to participate in the sidewalk chalking in the afternoon with the help of artist Janet Tombros. They also potted plants and visited with the animals brought from the Central Florida Zoo.

The rain showers subsided in time for Tom MacCubbin well known author and expert on Gardening Issues to present his program on Minimal Maintenance Landscaping. The Suzuki Violin Students also managed to stage their performance, when the showers subsided at 3:30 p.m.

The Silent Auction had fifteen lucky winners, and the Raffle Hunt this year drew seventeen winners. The proceeds raised from this event will go to several deserving students who are attending the University of Florida’s Apopka Campus studying for degrees in Horticulture or related subjects. The students will be invited to attend the Welcome Back Coffee that the Garden Club organizes in September. Scholarships are also awarded to needy students to attend the Wekiva Youth Camp, a Florida Federation of Garden Club’s, accredited camp held in August every year at the Wekiva Springs State Park.

The Sweetwater Oaks Garden Club thanks the local business community for their support, with sponsorships and advertisements in the program: The Insight Credit Union, the Adventure Girls, and the Lake Brantley Beta Club for their volunteer help. Winn Dixie of Apopka, 7-11, and Fresh Market of Longwood, Publix, Lowes of Altamonte Springs, Starbucks, Bear Lake Road, Abocos Salon & Spa, Treasure Chest of Sweetwater, Sweetwater Oaks Homeowners Association, Steve Kleiber, Chatlos Property Manager, Longwood Ballroom, and many others for their help and support in so many different ways.

I would like to thank everyone that has registered with our new site and been so patient as we continue to improve and add new functionality every month.  It has been a major undertaking but we are moving toward being one of the premiere sites in central Florida for HOA communities.  I just wanted to send out a quick post to let everyone know about some of the added features to the site and what they mean to our community.

• User Management
• Allowing members to subscribe gives us the ability to post ‘member only’ content.
• Allowing each member their own identity for future communications in the community.
• There are many other features coming that will be driven by member only data.
• All users were emailed their user name and passwords.  If you are having trouble logging in just submit a request for help through the contact form and I will be glad to help.
• Allowing convenient ’forgot password’ utility.  If you can’t log in just click Forgot Password and you can recover your password.
• Subscription Management
• This one has taken me some time to get working correctly but I believe we are finally there.  Please let me know if you have not receiving your new post updates via email.
• Individuals are allowed to manage their subscriptions using their user profiles. (Don’t worry if you don’t know how to do this yet, I am working on a community documentation library)
• Community Calendar
• A community Calendar has been added and will be updated with events and reservation data.
